I have been involved with many masters and teachers in a variety of spiritual traditions over the past 25 years, and have also been responsible for assisting hundreds of students during this time. Through this process I have learned much about the concept of authority. For most people the idea of authority implies an unbalanced power dynamic wherein one person has capabilities or knowledge that the other does not. The one with greater knowledge in any specialized field typically holds a superior position in the relationship.

The dynamic of authority depends upon childhood dramas of powerlessness, during which most people have become conditioned to submit to all authorities. In most cultures, this conditioning is extreme enough to cause people to fear their own power. Being conditioned into the idea that one is powerless and must seek knowledge from a true authority inflicts a great deal of harm upon individuals, and keeps humanity as a whole operating at a lower level of consciousness.

To submit to one in authority is unconscious and automatic for most people, even when such submission results in mental, emotional or physical harm. The greatest disease among humanity is the entrenched belief in the inferiority of the individual who is not the authority. Yet this fear of power, which begins in infancy, is exceedingly difficult to identify, confront and transmute. This ongoing dynamic is frequently found among spiritual seekers who willingly submit to and believe in anyone who is conscious and empowered. Some teachers and gurus exploit this human weakness to serve their own ends. The result of following, submitting and surrendering to such a being is continued disempowerment.

My primary focus in working with people is to activate and empower their own inner spiritual authority. You might think that many people would be motivated to persist with this type of transformational work and become freed from their conditioning so that they may experience their own true power. All too often, this is not the case. Many people are too fearful to proceed with the practices that can free them from their enslavement to others who claim to be authorities.

Even the physical body may evidence this disempowerment, imprisioning people in ill health and disease, and making them dependent on medical authorities. With such a person, I work to give them the tools to free themselves, and overcome resistances to claiming their own power. Until this is accomplished, their fear reinforces the erroneous conditioning they have received all of their lives from family, schools, society, religion, culture, etc.

Spiritual teachers and others who take advantage of this prevailing human conditioning are actually acting out their own disempowerment by seeking power over others. I have seen this dynamic in medical and health care professionals, mental health workers, educators, clergy, and gurus. Even the lowly bureaucrats relish every opportunity to feel that they have power over others. Schools and universities condition the students who will enter these professions to remember that they are the authority, and that their patients, clients, congregants or customers do not know what is best for them. These systems are heavily invested in maintaining the status quo of authority.

Playing the role of either the authority or the follower can represent a form of enslavement. Both roles are derived from unconscious and limiting beliefs, based in the consciousness of separation, dualism and elitism that permeate human culture. None of this comes from Spirit, and until one breaks free from these limits, s/he cannot attain their true divine state.

To be of service to others does not depend upon any implied authority, nor does giving such service make one into an authority. To submit to any authority outside of one’s own higher self reinforces social conditioning and prevents the realization of his/her inherent divinity. A person who is fully empowered into his/her own inner, spiritual authority set a powerful example for others. The self-empowered individual represents a threat to prevailing cultural systems. Such individuals have realized the God-within, and outer authority no longer holds any meaning for them, nor has any influence upon their lives.

This state of consciousness brings a definite and blissful feeling of peace with oneself and the world. We can all remember at least one experience when we felt a moment or two of quietude and stillness of mind. For the spiritual seeker, these experiences are considered to be of great value in the quest, and s/he desires to attain them on a regular basis.

The ancient traditions of enlightenment insist that the ability to focus, concentrate, and quite the mind is critical to spiritual development. Yet, meditation is not the act of either concentrating or focusing the mind. Meditation is defined by esoteric practitioners as a “stream” or flow of consciousness that is always and endlessly in existence. By the practice of stilling the mind, we allow ourselves to experience the ultimate consciousness that underlies all of manifestation. We join our minds to this cosmic source whenever we limit the vibrations coming in from the outer levels of consciousness.

All knowledge is contained within the river of consciousness, and may be accessed through meditation practices. The existence of this source, and the importance of meditation are emphasised in both eastern and western traditions of enlightenment. There are a variety of preliminary practices that aid the seeker in increasing awareness of the processes of the lower mind. Having gained this awareness, it becomes easier to ultimately stop all lower thoughts and mental distractions. The alchemical wisdom teachings referred to this level of practice as “fixing the volatile.”

In meditation training, the practitioner chooses a specific focus for his/her meditation. The focus may involve breath, movement, rhythmic chants, ceremonial, and imagery. The purpose is to increase the ability to concentrate, excluding every thing that is not a part of one’s focus. These practices also create vibrational energy, tapping into source, and leading one into an altered state of consciousness wherein that energy merges with the physical body.

A variety of symbol structures are used in these practices to lead the seeker into a particular point in the “flow,” and thus access specific knowledge and energies. For example, meditative ceremonial provides a symbol structure that involves physical movements, imagery, prayer, and chants; and is designed to expand the consciousness of those who perform and witness the ceremony. Through such practices we are are able to merge our consciousness fully with that of oneness and unity, creating a state of expanded awareness that remains a part of our consciousness at all times.

As meditative practice deepen, we becomes aware of this uniting of consciousness, and all levels of being are affected. The physical signs of this merging are slow, deep breathing, a lower heart rate, and a near-suspension of all bodily functions. The mind, if it is noticed at all, has the perspective of witnessing rather than generating. All emotions are transmuted into peaceful bliss. One who has experienced this ecstatic consciousness often finds great difficulty in describing it to others, as it really transcends language.

It is advisable to meditate both to still the mind and feel at one with the source; and also in order to receive experiential teachings and specialised energies. In the esoteric Kabalistic tradition all wisdom is represented in the symbol structures of the Tree of Life, the imagery of the esoteric Tarot, and in other ancient glyphs. The practitioner takes in the imagery of the symbol, and meditates upon it until s/he absorbs the essence contained therein.

In accessing and experiencing the energy of the Tree of Life, a technique known as “pathworking” is used. This ancient technique has sometimes been misunderstood, and interpreted as guided visualisation. While guided visualisation can be a useful and helpful tool for self-development, the original technique of pathworking involves a type of spirit journey that is most powerful in its ability to bring one into a state of tremendously expanded consciousness and deep wisdom.

The core practice of pathworking involves gazing at the chosen symbol structure for a period of time. This may range from 5 minutes to half an hour or more. Effort is made to keep the mind still, and focused solely on the image while at the same time aspiring with heart and mind to the highest self. This technique is best done in a small group in the presence of an experienced practitioner. The leader’s role is to be aware on many levels in order to monitor the process, and to provide facilitation and feedback for the participants. It does not involve any creation of imagery on the part of the teacher.

Pathworking, like all experiential meditations, requires the ability to focus, still, and concentrate the mind on one thing to the exclusion of all else. This skill is the prerequisite for meditative experiences that produce a state of complete absorption into the source. This blissful experience is also achieved through chanting, movement of the physical body in ecstatic dance and yoga, and rhythmic breathing. Throughout all of these practices one is working on activating and increasing the power of the life-force energy within the physical body. Even though an ecstatic state may only last a short time, the experience remains with the practitioner, and is integrated into consciousness on the cellular level .

As the practitioner learns from and integrates these experiences, s/he realises that the meditative experience is actually a dynamic flow of energy that is always present. Where before the perception was that “I meditate,” the practitioner begins to perceive and feel that “I am meditation.” The body, mind, and emotions are realised as instruments of this endless flowing source. When the experienced practitioner meditates, s/he does so as a fully conscious participant in the river of life. This higher understanding allows us to more consciously devote our energies to conscious creation in the physical world at a level of effectiveness that would not be possible without the clarity attained through long practice.

The ultimate meditation practice is one in which the meditative state and consciousness of connection to the source is maintained constantly in every circumstance. This is the full and complete living of the essential vibration of spirit. One who has attained this consistency of consciousness never sees anything or anyone as separate from the source. When one lives in full awareness of the river of life that flows in and through his or being, all actions are guided every moment by this higher knowing. This consciousness allows one access to knowledge that seems to be hidden to others. It also allows one to remain in a state of stillness and serenity, even in the midst of the raging tempests of materialistic life.

The ancient wisdom states that we cannot attain the deeper knowledge or the expanded consciousness of an adept without the practices of meditation. It is only in a state of complete inner quiet that the still small voice of the true teacher and revealer within may be heard. Through conscious use of the sacred meditation symbols, we may attain direct understanding of the mysteries of our being. Reading and studying without meditative practices leads no where. While the intellect may be entertained and the emotions inspired by reading spiritual teachings, no enlightenment will occur unless the mental knowledge acquired is experienced energetically and integrated into the deepest core of being through meditative practices.

Going within and connecting with the endless flow of consciousness is necessarily a life-changing experience. Turning away from the senses, the mind, the emotions, and the outer world allows us to experience ourselves as pure, conscious, spiritual vibration. More information and greater understanding of the mysteries of the self can be obtained through proper meditation than what could be acquired through years of reading.

The saturation of the intellect with the ancient teachings is only the beginning of seeking. The end of all seeking is found within, never without. Meditation is the inward path that leads to union with the powerful source of creation. It is the vital and life-giving stream of consciousness that creates and sustains the manifest and the unmanifest in all of the worlds of being.

What we eat can dramatically affect energy levels throughout the day. Here are ten foods you can eat to increase your energy.

1. Spirulina - Packed with 67% protein, Spirulina is a powerful energizer. It’s dark green color reveals the depth of its nutritional gifts. Spirulina increases energy and decreases appetite, making it a perfect food for weight management, detoxification and increased vitality. Mask its strong flavor by blending with fruit juice or smoothies.

2. Raw fruits and vegetables - Cooking these life-giving plants depletes their enzymes, units of life-force energy that sustain and renew the body. For better health, more mental clarity and an abundance of energy, eat a variety of raw fruits and vegetables every day.

3. Maca root - This plant from Peru has been used since ancient times to give vitality and long life. Maca helps the body adapt to stress and supports healthy hormone levels. Maca root powder can be added to smoothies and a variety of raw food recipes to deeply nourish and restore the body and the mind.

4. Fresh fruit and vegetable juices - The juice from fruits and vegetables is packed with vitamins and minerals. Juicing plants makes their nutrients available for immediate absorption into the blood and cells of the body. The digestive system doesn’t have to work to extract the nutrition from the fiber, making fresh juice one of the most energizing foods you can consume.

5. Mushrooms - Reishi, Maitake and Shitake mushrooms have long been revered for their medicinal properties. They are known as aids to longevity. These mushrooms balance blood sugar levels, and contain the important minerals Selenium and Potassium. Eaten on a regular basis, mushrooms deeply nourish the body and can bring your energy back to a more youthful level.

6. Nut & Seeds - These natural, raw foods must be soaked to activate their enzymes and remove toxins. Nuts and seeds are a source of healthy fats and proteins that sustain energy longer than processed snacks. Feeling low on energy late in the afternoon? Reach for raw, soaked nuts and seeds and watch your energy rise and concentration return.

7. Cacao - Raw, unprocessed Cacao is phyto-nutrient dense, contains up to 20 times more protein (per acre) than soybeans, and stimulates physical and mental energy. Cacao powder or nibs can be added to smoothies to supercharge your energy any time of day. Caution - Cacao is powerful so little is needed on a daily basis to keep your energy high.

8. Fruit - Fresh and dried fruits contain natural carbohydrates and simple sugars. If you need a boost after a workout, enjoy fresh or dried fruits along with nuts and seeds. They contain natural sugars, so be sure to balance your intake of fruit with daily, vigorous exercise to burn the sugar and prevent it from turning into fat.

9. Water - Dehydration causes mineral depletion, headaches and sleepiness. You need sufficient water every day to keep your body and mind operating at optimum levels. Water also supports a steady metabolism, helping your body to maintain a healthy weight while bringing lots of energy to your day.

10. Fasting - Abstaining from food for short periods of time can increase your energy. Fasting gives the body a chance to clean house. When you refrain from eating, the digestive energy turns toward dissolving and removing toxins that have accumulated in the body. Though you may feel tired the first 24 to 48 hours as this detoxification process takes place, in the long run, fasting restores your cells to a more youthful state and abundant energy returns. Many people report feeling fresh, clear and energized after 3 or 4 days of fasting. For fasts longer than 7 days, seek guidance and supervision from a health professional.

Imagine a beautiful temple in the woods filled with peace and serenity, the deep vibrations of sacred space emanating from within. This temple, like its ancient predecessors, is a sacred form that has been purified and consecrated. There are four important areas within the temple: the portal, entry room, outer temple, and Holy of Holies.

As a symbolic representation of divine being, these areas of the temple each contain specific wisdom about the pathways leading to that ultimate spiritual state. Each area of the sacred temple also relates to one of the four aspects of the human being. As these areas are purified and consecrated, the wisdom within that portion of the temple becomes synthesized into one’s being. When the wisdom of the portal, entry room, outer temple, and Holy of Holies has been mastered, and each of the four lower bodies made into sacred space, the Divine Presence comes to reside within the human form.

The portal is the outermost area of the temple-complex. This is where we stand before entering through the temple doors. On either side of the portal are black and white pillars that represent all of the pairs of opposites. This symbolism also points to the manifest world of light and dark, day and night. The portal represents the physical body, which is the densest body, and the only one that is subject to the three-dimensional world of time and space.

When we stand at the portal, we are outdoors in the sunlight. The physical body depends upon the sun for its existence. In this body, created of the earth itself, the animal instincts for physical survival reside. By consciously accessing the wisdom and energies of the portal, these physical drives may be purified, transmuted and balanced. The black and white pillars of the portal are the keys to this wisdom.

Representing all opposing forces, the pillars remind us to remain in the center. In terms of the physical body, this means exercising moderation and balance in all things related to the body. Vibrant food, pure water, fresh air and exercise are the primary requirements for balanced physical being.

Portal level practices that help enlighten the physical body include detoxification, yogic techniques, a vegan diet and daily meditation. As we attune to the wisdom of the pillars, we begin to live physical life in a more conscious way. Reflection upon the meanings of all opposites, and efforts to reconcile them into unity leads to a greater integration of compassion for all sentient beings. As we work through and master the wisdom of the portal, a deep cellular radiance is attained. When the body has been brought into this level of mastery, we may move forward through the temple doors.

In contrast to the outdoor, sun-drenched portal, the entry room of the temple is dark, closed, and silent. It provides a place to pause and reflect upon spiritual intention, before moving deeper into the sacred space beyond. This room represents the emotional body, and the dark regions of the subconscious mind. The wisdom to be attained in the entry has to do with the purification and illumination of the emotional drives and impulses of the deep psyche. Within this dark womb, we are challenged to find the source of our emotions, and transmute this energy into its true essence.Through this process, the Higher Self gains access to the tremendous power that has been trapped in emotional forms.

In the mystical traditions, the subconscious mind is considered to be the gateway to the inner teacher, and to deep intuitive experiences. As a personal opening to the collective unconscious, the individual’s subconscious mind holds great potential as a mechanism for accessing the wisdom teachings of the ages. However, it is only when the personal subconscious mind is cleansed of its shadows and becomes still that these inner teachings can come into our conscious awareness.

Just as we cannot safely sail on turbulent seas, so we cannot proceed on the journey to the higher self with unruly emotions. Expressions such as jealousy, anger, grief, resentment, guilt, unworthiness and all other unbalanced emotions act as clouds, blocking out the full radiance of the sun that is the true Self. In the dark shadows of the entry room, these imbalances must be seen and understood. Following this exploration, old emotional forms are destroyed, and the power they have held is returned to the Higher Self. The potentials to be mastered within the entry room include: self-awareness, control of the desire nature, detachment from emotions, cultivation of serenity and peace in all circumstances, purification of the intuition, and strengthening connections to the inner realms.

From the dark quiet of the entry room, we enter into the outer temple. Here we are once again in the light, but it is a more diffuse light than that of the portal, as it is filtered through windows. We also see another pair of black and white pillars in the distance, near the Holy of Holies. The outer temple contains the sacred records and teachings. This is where sacred ceremonies and rites are performed. The outer temple symbolizes the lower mental body, which fuses with the higher mental body as mastery is attained. In this room, great knowledge may be acquired and transmissions can be received from the subtle realm of the Higher Self. Mastery of the wisdom available within the outer temple is often attempted yet seldom fully attained.

The wisdom of the outer temple involves the purification and balancing of our mental processes. The mental nature is filled with impressions and thought-forms received from the outer world. Thought-forms are created by the repeatedly holding specific mental patterns. These patterns are ideas, concepts, beliefs, and intellectual understandings. The great majority of these patterns come from the conditioning received from schools and universities, family structures, cultural and political institutions, churches, and other social systems. In the outer temple, we are led to confront, dissolve, and transmute all limiting, erroneous mental concepts.

The study of the ancient metaphysical teachings is essential to master the powers available through the outer temple. These teachings reveal the true purpose of the Self in incarnation, and in doing so, inspire devotion to the path. Wisdom schools contain knowledge of the multiple dimensions of existence, and provide resources for practical work that brings direct experience of the subtle planes. Through devotion to the practices and study of the mysteries, knowledge and understanding of spiritual reality is gained, and the lower mind becomes liberated from constricted, conditioned thought.

Many esoteric ceremonies and rituals are learned and performed within the outer temple. These conscious acts of focused attention aid the lower mind to take in new concepts, while also providing a powerful resource for ecstatic experiences of union with the higher self. Ritual performance impacts all of the lower bodies simultaneously in a unique way, bringing the whole personality into a more purified and vibrant state.

The wisdom-essence of the outer temple is acquired and integrated over a long period of time. The nature of these teachings and practices is expansive and limitless. These realizations and attainments include: intellectual mastery of the concepts of esoteric science, multi-dimensional memory, witness consciousness, illumination of thought and thought-forms, conscious communion with the Higher Self, and ecstatic states of immersion in unity consciousness. As these experiences become integrated into all levels of being, we begin living life in greater harmony. Once the reconciliation of the three lower bodies is attained, we may approach the Holy of Holies.

In ancient time, the Holy of Holies was the inner temple where only the High Priest or Priestess could enter in. It is the most potent and powerful space within the temple complex. Its wisdom is held within the forms and symbols of sacred geometry. Veils cover the entrance to the Holy of Holies and the ancient wisdom proclaims that when we have become prepared, the veils will be rent from top to bottom, and we shall find ourselves within.

The geometric foundation of the Holy of Holies is the Vesica Pisces, the sacred fish. This symbol is the space between two overlapping circles. These circles represent the realms of the higher and lower selves. This symbolic shape formed by their convergence is known esoterically as the sphere of being. This sphere is the etheric body, and its primary function is to reflect the light from the higher self into the lower bodies.

The etheric body contains the other three bodies that form the personality - the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of being. It is also in constant vibratory contact with the Higher Self. Because it is a subtle, reflective body, both the lower and higher realms may impact and effect the etheric level. On the physical level, these impacts may manifest as disease, illness, mental or emotional tensions. Wherever there are obstructions in the lower bodies, the radiance of the etheric body cannot anchor. When the lower nature has become purified and consecrated, the etheric body reflects more potent radiations from the spiritual light of the soul.

The wisdom of the Holy of Holies is more subtle than that contained in the outer areas of the temple. Its teachings are paradoxical and abstract. The experiences attained are often beyond language, though one is transformed in a powerful way. When the sphere of being is fully anchored in all of the lower bodies, and communion with the higher self is occurring, the radiant light of the Self flows outward through the aura. This radiance is seen as halos and light emanating from enlightened beings. This is the source of healing power, the sense of spiritual presence and the essence of all miracles.

Potencies that may manifest when the essences of the Holy of Holies have been attained include: vibratory transmissions, unified consciousness, command of manifestation, multi-dimensional mastery of the light body, and alignment with the higher will. When we reside within the Holy of Holies, we live fully in the divine presence. Our lives are filled with joy and peace, and we give freely to all in love, compassion, and service.

The temple of the Self is not a building made of stone or wood. It is the human being who has become a purified vehicle for the sacred essence of Spirit. Temples of the mysteries are powerful symbolic representations of the components and processes leading to divine realization. Though we may pass through a multitude of darkness, shadow, challenges and opportunities, our desire for divine union provides sustenance and inspiration along the way. By working with the symbolism of the temple, initiates direct the lower unto the higher, and receive the blessings of communion with the divine self.

The Sanskrit word guru has several meanings; the most common is teacher. Gu means darkness and ru is the light. The spiritual teacher referred to as a guru is one who can take away the darkness of ignorance and bring down the light of wisdom. Traditionally, the guru is someone who serves as a sacred conduit for spiritual force that she or he uses to guide others. However in modern times, and especially in the Western world, the word has become associated with anyone who acquires followers in virtually any field.

While there are many reliable spiritual teachers who are real gurus; there are also some false gurus and even good gurus who have lost their way. The student-teacher relationship with a guru can be highly rewarding, ideally resulting in the release of old habits and conditioning, and the establishment of greater awareness, success and happiness in life. For this process to be successful, the teacher must be a true guru, and the student must follow the guidance given. Discerning a true guru from a false one, however, is not always easy…

As a planetary species, humanity has arrived at a critical crossroads. The times we are living in have been described in the ancient prophecies of many spiritual traditions. We are faced with a serious choice to either ignore the harm we see and witness further and irreversible damage, or take up our mantle of stewardship with each other, the earth and our Creator with renewed courage and commitment to a whole new way of life.

A Revolution of Consciousness

We must use our collective resources wisely, on every plane, to prepare a new way. To turn the tide from materialism toward spirituality requires a renewal of not only our lifestyle and culture, but a renewal of consciousness itself within each person. Wise people know that global systems are presently functioning in a way that is far too separate from the people they are meant to serve; too focused on material life, greed, and self-interests; and inherently limiting to individual personal expansion and harmonious life on earth, which is now at risk from these dysfunctional systems. Read more

In the midst of the devastation in Haiti, survivors huddle together in outdoor areas. One group has gathered and is living in a park near where the international media has set up to cover the disaster. There is no electricity and only a few candles glow in the dark as people settle in for another restless night. A reporter asked a man, “How have you all survived in the park with no water, no food?”. The man replied, “We pray and sing psalms.” In the background of the news report, many people can be heard praying and singing.

Here in an incredibly difficult circumstance, many people are showing a profound faith in spirit. Another television report showed a man being removed from the rubble after he spent three days in darkness and uncertainty. He was asked, “How did you manage to hang on?” The survivor replied, “I prayed to God to save my life and he did.”

Later, reporters gathered at a local cemetery where hundreds of bodies are waiting to be laid to rest. A small family group approached the scene carrying the coffin of a deceased loved one. Their determination to bury her with dignity paid off as the cemetery allowed them to have an unused crypt. After closing the crypt, a man in their small group prayed, “Lord you have given this woman to us, and now you have taken her back.” So simple and sincere, this faith in the face of catastrophic loss.

Tragedy gives us an opportunity to share without reserve. Please join forces in spirit with the people of Haiti by devoting time each day to “pray and sing psalms” in support of these faithful survivors. It can be a prayer, chant, hymn or mantra of your choice. What matters is the intention and the vibration. If you can, gather friends and sing together, dedicating your intentions on behalf of the people of Haiti.

I urge you to send whatever assistance you can to Haiti. There are many organizations working to help and they all need your support. Here are some links to get started…

http://doctorswithoutborders.org

http://www.yele.org

http://www.directrelief.org

http://www.unicef.org

We can all learn so much from this and other tragedies. There are better ways to resolve the difficulties of daily life in impoverished nations. The risks we face as planetary changes occur can unite us as citizens of one world. Every day we have the opportunity to learn to share the abundance as one people, not just in the aftermath of natural disasters. To help us move into greater oneness, let’s not forget to pray and sing psalms.

The philosophy that underlies all meaningful enlightenment methods is that of Unity or Oneness. Creation takes place upon the stage of manifestation, the lowest arc in the descent of divine energy. Consequently we experience a multitude of forms and images, and construct an endless array of mental concepts while we are engaged in incarnate life.

Form is an outcome of force, a congealing of energetic essence. By viewing the immense number of forms on the physical and astral planes, we begin to get some sense of the limitless light vibration that has created and endlessly continues to enter into all of these objects, images and ideas. Yet, we can never fully grasp the concept of this limitlessness with the limited human mind.

The purposes of the appearance of duality are many: spirit dances out the drama of life for the sake of experience and expansion, drama leads to opportunities to open the mind and heal the heart, duality can be used consciously and deliberately as a spiritual method to lead one into unity. This last idea - using duality as a mechanism to attain enlightenment - begins with a focus on our own form, the physical body.

In Alchemical Tantra, the body and the spirit are one. What prevents the complete absorption of the body into the light of spirit, and causes the body to feel separate from spirit are limitations within the mind. The mind is energy, and the body is the child of this energy. The body exists as an end product of a mental idea. Blocks, obstructions, occlusions and resistances in the mind manifest in the body, and prevent the entrance of light into the obstructed areas. This is the basis for disease and illness, but it is also a key to the attainment of the enlightened body.

Freeing the mind from its limitations and conditioned concepts is the first step in this process, and one that takes place over many years most people. A powerful and useful practice to begin this process is to detach from one’s beliefs. One must step back from the automatic habit mind, and begin to view all ideas, concepts, and thoughts from the perspective of witness consciousness. Most people will find that the mind is quite fixed on its beliefs, especially spiritual beliefs and concepts. By using witness consciousness, one begins to see more clearly the conditioning that controls the lower mind.

What are these beliefs? Where have they come from? More importantly, what essential energetic experience are they blocking by their existence? What physical consequences are they bringing to life in the body and environment? Working with witness consciousness in daily meditation helps to free the true spiritual being from identification with the personality. Even if one has freed him/herself from family, social and cultural conditioning (a task that few people have truly accomplished), it is often quickly replaced with new conditioning from spiritual traditions, teachers, alternative cultural sources, etc.

Bringing the mind into a state of free-flowing energy (blowing the mind!) that is beyond all conditioned thought allows one to experience true divine being. Getting a taste of this ecstasy begins by the simple process of witnessing and letting go. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose but your limitations!
