Spirituality in the Material World
As I reflect upon the recent news of another false guru being brought into the light, I realize again the desperation felt deeply within so many people. They were seeking material wealth and hoping to find their own power by following a self-proclaimed “spiritual leader”. Indeed, many of his followers are saying that they have found just those things, in spite of the tragic consequences this same search has had upon others.
Those who are feeling so good about their “guru”, and defending him by claiming that it was simply time for those others to die, show the depth of the damage caused by the techniques used by false gurus worldwide. This is not the only false guru, only the latest to come to light. It is predictable that his entrenched followers will defend him, perhaps even to their own deaths. A deep separation occurs between body-mind and soul once one has received repeated indoctrination into such a group.
A charismatic figure, promising unlimited wealth, appeals to the material nature of the human. However, to keep the illusion intact, s/he must somehow weave a spiritual message into the mix or risk losing those followers who see the superficiality of questing only for financial wealth. Though in the beginning, such a “leader” might have been motivated by some inner light, the great accumulation of money, power and fame will ultimately cloud that light while inflaming the ego nature.
In the western world such figures are common. They play upon the inequities that naturally exist within materialistic society. In western culture, financial wealth is given the highest respect and the wealthy wield the greatest power over others. Those who have little money are dismissed by such leaders as “losers”, or those who have not owned their power or taken control of their lives. In society, those who need money the most are given the least financial help; while those who have the most money are given the greatest opportunities to gain even more. Such is the nature of the materialistic world.
It is predictable that self-proclaimed “leaders” will arise to prey upon the vulnerabilities of those who are marginalized in a social culture that only gives value to those with financial wealth. How many struggling souls yearn every day to have such wealth, to gain recognition, or at least a simple home in a safe environment? There are more of these seekers than there are “leaders”, and this ratio figures into the formulas created by these “leaders” to ensure that they gain the most wealth from the training and events they offer to others.
If everyone becomes a wealthy leader, there will be no more followers to bring in more money. Therefore, such “leaders” must make sure that they remain at the top of the hierarchy of wealth, knowledge, power and fame. To do so, they must create a system where the followers must pursue training after training, event after event, costing more and more money each time. Even if some followers gain in wealth or personal power, this system will ensure that a significant portion of it will continue to be given to the “leader”.
I am grateful to the souls who gave their lives to shed their light upon this horrible distortion that was bound to lead to disaster at some point. All cult leaders are eventually revealed for what they are, and sadly this often occurs following the death of some of their followers. Spiritually, those who die at the hands of false gurus are the true leaders for they have shown the world the meaning of self-sacrifice for the sake of awakening and warning others.
I pray that everyone who becomes aware of this circumstance will acknowledge this great gift these spirits have brought forward through this current tragedy. Do not let their deaths be in vain. Instead learn from them the pitfalls and dangers of giving others control of one’s body-mind. Share this experience with others so that further damage may be avoided, and karmic corrections can come into play for the false gurus.
Those who remain bonded to this teacher proclaim (as do all who have been affected by mind-control methods) that he is good, that he has helped them and many others, and that he could never be at fault. These statements are symptoms of the distortions that have been introduced into their body-minds by the use of hypnotic and cult-like techniques. Also they have invested large amounts of money in this man and it will be difficult indeed for them to see the truth. They have first been brainwashed by culture (their teacher has been promoted by Oprah, Larry King and others inhabiting the exalted social realm of wealth and celebrity), and then further influenced by the Large Group Awareness Training model of indoctrination used by many teachers of his kind.
I have traveled around the world and seen and experienced many gurus, eastern and western. One of the most important things I have observed is this: evil never appears as evil. Few people will bother to go and listen to someone who shows or speaks evil outright. Therefore, evil must always appear to be good. Evil must also do some good here and there, otherwise, there would be no followers. It is a subtle force, very clever and not easy to discern. Such a force will slowly work its way into the false guru, finding fractures and crevices within an ego seeking celebrity, money and power.
If you want to find spirituality in this material world, look to the great saints and masters whose lives were lived to show the right way. Jesus had no money. Buddha had no money. The wealth they offered was spiritual. In the case of Jesus, the spirituality he offered was hated by the material world as they saw the threat of losing their illusions of power over others and the glorification of their egos as leaders of the temple. This world will seldom crucify a rich man, nor will it make rich those who have true wealth of spirit.
Beware of those bringing messages that you can have all the wealth you desire. In the first instance, examine your desires. If you first seek and attain the divine within yourself, everything else will be given to you. You cannot imagine the perfection that the fulfillment of this promise can bring into your life. To be truly free and empowered in this world, you must first liberate your spiritual self from the bonds of materiality.
Where to find this divine self? There are many ways and many teachers who can assist. However, do not look to those who are selling wealth seminars, showing an ego invested in fame or asking you to betray the signals from your body-mind for food, water and fresh air. Though the divine can be attained without extreme suffering, some things do have to be sacrificed. These include your identification with the ego-mind that invests itself in the false promises of the material world. To find the divine self requires that you become the leader, claim your own power and give up the illusions of security and comfort that comes from following others.

Hey
I like your article. I think this age is not about gurus at all espeically if they dont teach you how not to depend on them. The Guru age was Piceses (jupitur) and that not the direction that we are evolving in. People can find there own light with some instruction and a rutine.

In our oneness, we share with each other in many ways. Those who seek enlightenment do it not for themselves, but to become a blessing to others. Such teachers are of great value to spiritual seekers. When the seeker has likewise attained, she or he will share with others in the same way.
True teachers give methods and techniques for the student to use to awaken to his or her own inner authority and power. The teacher also serves as a mirror for the student’s process in this awakening.
However, the true teacher does not encourage dependency, but rather its opposite - absolute independence - not just from the teacher but from their own unconcious, conditioned thoughts and beliefs. In this way, the student becomes the master.
Guru’s will not disappear anytime soon. There will just be more of them. Thus, the importance of discernment all along the spiritual path.
Shalom,
Chavah Aima
