Purification as Spiritual Practice
In the western mystical traditions, candidates for initiation must first receive the sacrament of purification before being admitted into an esoteric order for study and practice. In the Egyptian Rosicrucian initiatory schools, purification practices included fasting, ritual bathing and secluded meditation. Mediaeval alchemists and healers focused on cleansing and purifying the internal organs to raise their energetic awareness. Most modern occult rituals also call for the immediate ceremonial purification of new members as they are brought into the temple to take their vows.
In the yoga traditions of the east, purification practices also play a valuable role in preparing oneself to devote body-mind and soul to seek the higher life. These methods include the internal cleansing of all bodily openings where energy flows into and out of the being. Fasting, special herbs and dietary restrictions are used to aid the attainment of more subtle states of consciousness.
Purification is a powerful practice, and is itself the first initiation. The process of spiritual purification brings out shadows from many levels simply by increasing the light within. Water is the symbolic element represented in this initiation. Water is the free flowing, sacred substance of the alchemists; the prakriti of the yogi’s. This force is abundant in nature. It is the fabric of the material world. The human body is primarily composed of this fluidic matter.
The water of spiritual purification is said to be fiery; it destroys all that is not divine. The fire is cosmic and when purification practices are undertaken, this liquid lightning ignites a deep process of cellular transformation. The result is the release of old debris, outworn conditioning, and old emotional patterns. Simultaneously, the spirit within is quickened in a tangible way and greater consciousness illuminates one’s life.
For several years as a teacher in a mystery temple, I required no particular purification practices for those desiring initiation. Progress was limited to mental inspiration and emotional exaltation with no resulting lasting change in consciousness or life. Then I introduced the Living Light program as a spiritual purification practice. These 21 days became a time of profound initiation for all who experienced the plan.
Whether you want to heal your body-mind or intensify the connections to your soul, spiritual purification offers a powerful way to achieve your goals. If you are devoted to awakening to the new enlightened life on earth, and activating your full divine potential, you will at some point come into a time of purification. Do not resist but plunge in and do what your heart and soul know is right!
I am offering a new Living Light support group from September 18 to October 16. This is a 28 day program of intensive training and experience that includes teleconferences, webinars, a daily online forum and much more. Please take advantage of this opportunity to join others around the world in this potent spiritual practice, and reap the rewards that purification brings.
